• I am a little confused, I use to have this thing on my sidebar that said how many subscribers I had through jetpack, said I had 170 subscibers. One day I noticed the number ever went up or down it was stuck at 170 has been for like a year. Well I went to my hosting web mail and it looks like I get at least 10 new “users” per day. So I go to the “user menu” in the dashboard, there was a bunch of people in the wrong category so I changed everyone’s role to new subscribers, since then I have had many new users sign up from my notifications on my webmail. I go back and they are in my user menu listed as a subscriber. How ever they are signing up, are these subscribers getting notified of my posts? Are they real people? lol. I have tracking plug ins and I get a ton of traffic compared to what jetpack stats says, I would cry if I relied on jetpack, I have google webmaster tools in the site verification section and pinterest verification. I don’t make money on my blogging, it is a crafting hobby but some day with the clientele I think I have built up I may sell some day. I want to understand it all first. I rarely get comments, I took my facebook page off my sidebar because people seemed to prefer the page more than the blog and people stopped subscribing. Can anyone shed some light for me?

  • Subscribers as reported by Jetpack is different than the Users on your site. Most likely the Users on your site are spam.

    Hi @somanycrafts,

karpstrucking is right – in Jetpack, what it tracks as “subscribers” are folks who have clicked on your RSS Feed to get a feed of your posts.

In your Admin Dashboard > Users, those are people who have ‘registered’ on your site – mostly likely spammers. WP simply calls the lowest-level of users ‘subscribers’ but they are not the same thing as above. Unless you are running a site that *requires* visitors to be logged in (for example to read certain content or comment) then there is no reason to even allow anyone to register, so you may want to Uncheck that box (“anyone can register”) under your Settings>General.

I wouldn’t recommend forcing folks to login just to comment as very few people will ever do that and the point is to build an engaged audience – particularly if you ever want to sell them anything one day – so you WANT to make it easy for them to comment.

To do that, be sure to Uncheck “users must be registered and logged in to comment” under Settings >Discussion, then be sure to Activate Akismet, which will do a good job of catching comment spam.

Lastly, Facebook and other social networks are a great way to bring new readers to your site, so you DO want to encourage folks to Like your Facebook page – that’s where they are, so you need to be there to – just be sure that what you post there is inviting and brings them to your SITE to read your content.

Great, I have almost 7000 spammers but no spam, odd. Do I delete them? They all have 0 under posts. My site publishes on my facebook name but not page, which is good because I have alot of facebook people on my friends list but hardly any on my page so I didn’t seem to see any benefit in having a page. I can put it back on there, I just added to publicize on twitter too.
So to truly know how many followers I have that actually get notified when I post I count the jetpack subscribers, my blog lovin and my google plus and that is it? lol. It’s ok. I just want to know how accurate it is and if I am even getting any traffic at all! I know I am getting spam traffic now.
Thank you so much for your help!
