I ahd BuddyPress running on a normal WP install, and users were signing up to the main site, but once I changed the site to Multisite, when users sign up, they are not being added to the main site.

I believe this is correct. You’d need a plugin to add them to a specific site on the network, though it really shou;dn’t matter.

What do they need on the main site that they can’t do?

    Thanks Ipstenu.

A relief to know I’ve not done something wrong.

I’m just thinking about if I want to make them an admin on the main site or change their role.

One of the things I hope to do in the near future, is to create roles for writers, publishers, reviewers & readers

You can add them later ?? On a network, ‘no’ role makes you a ‘subscriber’ so really they have basic access. If you need to add someone later, go to the site you want to add them to and add a user ?? There you can make ’em admin or whatever.
