I was working in the staging site yesterday, today I can’t login – says wrong username or password. I know it’s the right login because I reset it yesterday and copied it into a text file.

Lost password redirects me to a 404 page on the live site.

I’ve disabled (via FTP renaming) all security and redirection and caching plugins, and deleted the .htaccess file (I had enabled permalinks yesterday because a plugin wasn’t working without them).

Cleared browser cache. Tried a different browser that I haven’t used in months, no luck.

Is there a way to turn off the admin only access? What happens if I disable the wp staging plugin on the staging site?

I’ve done a lot of work in there and don’t want to lose it all.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there!
Could you please try adding “/wp-login.php” to the end of the staging site’s URL and log in from there? Please let me know the response you will get, a screenshot would be helpful.

Another question, does your password contain any special characters?

And you can disable “wp-staging” plugin on the staging site by changing its folder name via FTP, this won’t affect your staging site in any mean, it will just disable the extra login form we add, so users would be able to log in via the default WordPress method (the one I described above).

    Thanks,
    Alaa`

I already tried disabling the plugin via FTP but still can’t login using /wp-admin/, /login/, /wp-login.php. The latter just redirects to /login/ and shows a 404 page (the normal one for the theme). /wp-admin/ redirects to /login/?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fexample.com%2Fexamplestaging%2Fwp-admin%2F and shows the same 404 page. (I’ve replaced the real domain name with example here)
You can try it yourself as I supplied the URL in the original post.

Special characters? only the usual ones above the numbers on the keyboard, such as #, (, % etc.

Another thing I see on the 404 page that I get when trying to login: the url contains the staging site string but the navigation menu items are all linked to the live site urls not the staging site ones.

Also the staging site home page navigation menu items link to the staging site urls BUT they all get redirected to the live site urls. Is that how it’s supposed to behave even when wp-staging is deactivated on the staging site?

    Thank you.

    Hi,

the log in issue should be solved by the latest update.
If this does not solve it for you, it is caused by something else.

No, as you said, it worked before means the reason for this issue is caused by something that changed on the staging site. This could have been an update you did or another change.

Clicking on one of the navigation links on your site creates a so-called 301 redirect.
Please check if you changed something in the .htaccess or permalinks of the staging site recently.

Does everything work when you create a new staging site?

If yes, that’s another indicator that one of your latest changes caused this issue.

Thank you. I was able to login after I disabled some plugins I had added – then I narrowed it down to one of a set of plugins by reactivating them one by one (I also reactivated and updated wp-staging). I had already removed the .htaccess file so I knew the redirect wasn’t originating there. The issue turned out to be Directories Pro Front End Submissions, which redirects logins to its own login page. I can leave that component inactive at this stage of development, and continue to use the staging site for the rest of the testing.
