I was under the impression that it’s a good idea for security purposes to set a username as though it were a password so effectively there are two passwords in operation.

I’ve just noticed on the 404 Error page a place that shows “Authors” and the link below links to my username as follows:

    mydomain.com/author/myusername

How do I remove this information from public viewing?

    Thanks

Not easily (read as “I really don’t think you can”) and it really doesn’t buy you anything: Security via Obscurity isn’t even a speed bump against attackers.

It’s your password strength that matters, and possibly limiting your login attempts.

If you yank all the links from your theme to the author page, it’ll ‘vanish’ and you COULD use a .htaccess redirect to somewhere else, but it doesn’t buy you that much.

The link to “Otto’s reply” above makes it clear that there’s no advantage in creating a complex username as is suggested on many blogs. The key seems to be a very complex password.

Now I find myself with a username that I’d prefer to change in light of this new information. But as this username is the default username it isn’t an option to delete or change it.

I’ve heard that this could be achieved with the WP-Optimize plugin. Is this worth considering?

Thanks very much for your replies.

    Two ways.

    1) If you’re DB savvy (and NOT using Multisite), just go in to the DB and edit it in wp_users

    2) Make a new account, delete the old one, MAKING SURE you assign the posts to the new admin account.

I’m not DB savvy so regarding option 2 …

It isn’t an option to delete the old account as it is fixed as the default one.

Sure it is: you can delete the old account IF you are signed on as the new account. WordPress won’t let you delete the account that you are currently signed in as.

Just as Ipstenu wrote MAKE SURE YOU ASSIGN THE POSTS AND PAGES TO THE NEW ACCOUNT.

Sorry for being loud, but when if you do not assign them to the new account then all those posts will be deleted and that would be not good.

If there is any concern about losing data (and there should be, backups are your friend) make a full backup of your files and database before doing any of this.

If you accidentally have a ‘WHOOPS!’ moment, being able to restore your files and database will help prevent the destruction of your liver. ??

Right, by replacing it as I suggested you… replace it ?? The new one becomes the fixed on. Unless you’re meaning somehow you added in extra code to make it default.

Make sure you assign the old posts BEFORE pressing that delete button. Works fine.

    Thanks everyone.

I hadn’t realised that I can login with a new account then delete the previous account.
