I have several WordPress webpages. On most of them I noticed a strange change. I have Users with different roles, most of them are authors. For reasons I don’t know (I didn’t change anything) the username (!) of all the users was changed to the admins username (!). Everything else remained the same. I also noticed that when I go on “Edit profile” on one of these profiles although I didn’t change anything, when I try to go to another page it shows the “your changes to the profile won’t be saved” dialogue.

I then tried to create a new user, giving this user a distinct username. But even then, after the user was created, the username was also changed to the admin’s user name.

Login of a user using the nickname, works, but it takes a long time.

Did anybody else have these problems? What is this?

  • My guess would be that your browser automatically fills in the username field. Since you entered your admin name in the login form, your browser always inserts it in this field.

Tip: have a look at this in another browser.

@threadi Sorry, no. Did this on different browsers and in addition: When I logged in with the new created user account, the username was also changed to the admin’s user name.

Then it’s really strange. A plugin you are using is probably to blame for the behavior. Deactivate them all as a test. If it then works normally, one of the plugins was to blame and you can find this out by activating it step by step.

@threadi Again: Sorry, no. I deactivated all plugins, nothing changed. But what I saw as an additional fact:

When I as admin go on the user profile list I see the users listed by their username, so they still seem to exist. But when I click on the username to edit it, for a split second you can see the real username in the according field (with the remark “username can’t be changed” next to it), before it is changed to the admin’s user name. I think that is way every time I try to leave the page it shows “changed have not been saved”. Something is forcing an (impossible) change of the username, but the change can’t be saved. What can force a temporary overwrite on a username? I tried to re-install the latest version of WordPress, but that didn’t change andything. In addition there is ONE of my websites that doesn’t have this problem and I don’t know why.

@threadi Okay, one additional thing I just found out. The only remarkable difference I have between the working websites and those who don’t is the fact that the working websites are using the original WordPress installation, all the others are different language versions: German, British English, Japanese, Portuguese, French.

Your description that the user name does not change until after loading is complete, again speaks for the browser as the cause. This is also supported by the fact that it apparently only happens with the EN_US language – presumably your browser recognizes this and fills in the fields accordingly. Instead of using a different browser, try using a different computer – perhaps from a friend or colleague. I can’t explain it any other way.

No, it was the other way around – but I think I’ve found the reason: it seems to have been caused by the password manager forcefully trying to overwrite the username. Still I don’t get why it didn’t affect the original version websites of WordPress, but all the other versions.

What “password manager”? Is it an app on the computer?

Yes, integrated into the browser. It has a function to fill in formulars automatically. I switched this function off and now it works.

Then I was right at first ?? You are welcome to mark the topic as solved if it is resolved for you.
