• After changing computers, I tried to log into my site and was told the username is unknown. (I had to re-register with a new name in order to be able to post here.) My web hosting service was able to verify that my password was being recognized. But as it stands I can’t do anything on my site because when I try to log in as admin I just get, “wrong username” or username not recognized.

    Really ?

Either way – do you have phpmyadmin ? If you do, you can reset both: https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/phpmyadmin/

Really. He knew how to ftp into my site, and using my supposedly unrecognized username and password we could see the “back end” of it. Not anything I could work with, though.

Thank you very much for the suggestion. I do not have phpmyadmin (yet!) and the tutorial frankly frightens me, with “if you have any doubts at all” and “not responsible for loss of data.” I’m in way over my head here. Why couldn’t Joe Blow download this tool and use it to mess with my databases?

What I find upsetting here is that my WordPress username appears to have vanished through no fault of my own, and now apparently I have no option but to spend all the time I have for my site learning how to use unfamiliar sharp-edged tools to fix something I didn’t break!

Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful that there are volunteers with the time and patience to create the tools and then tell me where they are and what they do. I guess I would also like to know if this is a routine experience and necessity in this world. Thanks again…

OK, you can mark this one resolved. My web designer gave me the correct user name. Thanks again for the help. Maybe some day I will get to use phpmyadmin . . .
