Hosting is more secure when PHP applications, like WordPress, are run using your account’s username instead of the server’s default shared username

    I run Ubuntu 13.10 LAMP

    With that in mind…

what is my account username? Is it the wordpress admin account username?

what is the servers default shared username? would that be root or www-data(http in centos)?

I found a website that says the following…

If you don’t change your default WordPress admin username, a hacker can easily break into your website.

If i change the default wordpress default admin username…will that cause problems with apache and the ability to install plugins directly from worpdress without using ftp?

    hello adamjedgar,

i think you’re too confused with what you read past… but i will clear all the thing…

    1) Hosting username and password is different from wordpress username and pass…

    2) when you install wordpress that time you can set your wordpress admin username and password..

    3) the default username is “admin” for wordpress but you can change when installing wordpress on your server…

    4) if you change default wordpress admin username then it will not affect on apache setting or any plugins installed or plugins which will install…

    5) when you create shared hosting account then your server admin will give you the details of your hosting admin panel and when you install wordpress on that shared server that time you decides your own username and password for your wordpress admin…….

    ok,
so how do i fix the issue of wordpress not being able to install plugins on the server?
Does the wordpress user with the appropriate admin permissions need to be part of the group with read/write permissions on the apache server?

Who should be the owner of the directory the plugin is installed inside? WordPress user or apache (www-data or http)?

On Ubuntu the files and directories should be owned by www-data.

    ok got that.

now with fedora and centos, i seem to have problems…i make http the owner of both and yet i still cannot seem to make it work properly.

Does ubuntu have the same iptables functionality as centos and fedora?

I only seem to be able to get wordpress to update or add new plugins if i disable the iptables altogether on a centos server and i am not sure why.

ah, i think i have the answer to my own question…

    help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo
Iptables is a firewall, installed by default on all official Ubuntu distributions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu). When you install Ubuntu, iptables is there, but it allows all traffic by default.

that explains why i can get it working on ubuntu and not centos unless i disable iptables…on Centos i believe the default is to stop all traffic!
