$user_ID Empty but am logged in

  • I am logged into my blog and can see admin screen and administer the blog.
    If I author posts or pages, my userID is used. However, on view screens, I do not have ‘edit’ for posts showing, and always have the ‘login’ (as opposed to logout) option shown on my page. I can logout, but only from the admin screen which does see me as logged in and shows my user ID.
    So..as best I can figure the Loop doesn’t see me as logged in and displays info on this basis, but other aspects do see me logged in and I have access and the like.
    I added <?php $user_ID ?> to the footer of my page to confirm that it knows who I am, but this shows up as blank.
    I have tried logging in and out (can do so no problem), but this doesn’t seem to affect the behaviour.
    I have tried changing themes on the outside chance there is something wrong there, but no luck.

    Has anyone seen this or have any suggestions.
