I’ve read the posts on this subject but they seem to be several years old and I don’t know if there is a more current solution.

I’m working with a fresh install of WordPress in its own directory. I have followed the Multisite codex including the code needed for the htaccess file. (I’m doing everything step by step because I am basically new at all this. I’m even writing down the steps on a notebook because this is a test network before doing the real thing).

I have three sites on the network (the main one and two others). When I add a new user to a site, that user automatically gets added to the other sites.

I’m thinking when a user registers on a site on their own, the same thing will happen.

Is there a way for a user to only sign up to that one site? If they come across another site on the network and they sign up for it, then both showing up it’s not an issue.

    Thank you.

***I should add my plan is to use one of the ecommerce solutions so I don’t know if once I set that up, this user-across-the-sites-registration will be an issue. I want to create a “sort of” marketplace: instead of having one account across the board (like Etsy), I would like each shop owner to have his or her own customer base. The reason I’d need the network is so that I can handle the “tech” behind the shops as a whole and so that I can communicate with shop owners directly through my own blog (which is that main network site).

  • Multisite uses a global “pool” of users. If your site is, for example:

    example.com/
        example.com/site-a
        example.com/site-b
        example.com/site-c

Then adding a user named joe as, say, an Editor on example.com/site-b will create a user for joe in the global user pool. However, joe will only have the access levels that you (or another Network Admin) grant him.

joe will exist as a Subscriber in example.com, example.com/site-a, and example.com/site-c, but won’t have any special privileges unless you specifically add him to those sites. And his privileges on one site won’t affect his privileges on any other. You can make joe an Administrator on /site-a and a Contributor on /site-c.

    From Multisite Network Administration:

By design, all users who are added to your network will have subscriber access to all sites on your network.

Darn. (Thank you for answering.) That feature on another site is exactly why I wanted to create mine.

May I ask if you know if the multinetwork plugin would work in not sharing members?

The thing is, let’s say Joe opens up Joe’s Computer Parts online shop. He goes through all this marketing to get people on his site and Mike opens an account on his shop. When Mike visits My Sites, he’ll see Darlene’s Computer Pieces shop. He’ll visit that shop out of curiosity, see she offers a gift with an order, and buy from her instead of from Joe who was the one who basically got him there.

Are you referring to the backend “My Sites” screen? According to this Codex page, that’ll only show you the sites where you’re an Administrator.

I think that only pertains to simple WP installations. The one I’m working on is a multisite so it looks like this.

Although the user won’t be able to visit the other pages’ dashboards, he/she will be able to visit any competitor shops.

I also tried the Multi-network plugin but because I’m using a subdirectory install (another must), it doesn’t work. (It gives me a 404 error). I’m REALLY trying to not have to install single WP installs per shop but so far it seems like it’s something I’m going to have to do, isn’t it? If so, that means I have to log in each and every time to every site so I can do maintenance isn’t it?

It was a dee-dee-deee moment on my part. Got it fixed.

    What was your solution?
    I have the same dilemma.

I have been looking fo this solution and finally but not solution??
