    Hi Diana,

Unfortunately, WordPress uses the same ‘upload_files’ capability to check if user can add new media files, as it uses to check permission for access to the Media Library itself. Thus it is not possible to achieve your purpose just changing user role.

In order to prohibit to the authors uploading new files you may block the “wp-admin/media-new.php” URL for this role.
It is possible to do with “Admin menu access” add-on of User Role Editor Pro:
    https://www.role-editor.com/block-admin-menu-items
    or
building a piece of code to block this menu item and URL manually, as described at this post:

    Hi Vladimir,
If I upgrade to the pro version, I can do this by blocking the block the “wp-admin/media-new.php” URL for this role?
Just to confirm before I purchase.
    Thank you

    Hi Diana,

    Yes, I confirm that.
You may block “Add new” menu item at “Media” menu for the Author role with Pro version. And it will disappear for this role. User still will see “Add New” button at the top of the “Media – Library” page, but if he click on it, permissions error message will be shown.

With Pro – do I get updated for life – just 1 year support or just updates for a year?

Simple subscription includes 1 year of support and updates.
In order to get the same for life you need to purchase LifeTime subscription.

    Hi,

I purchased and followed the steps. I turned on the Admin Menu Access and then blocked Media and Upload (see screenshot: https://www.dropbox.com/s/i7dfx80hopqz7en/AdminMenu-Error.png?dl=0)

As an author, I can still upload photos – however I can’t delete them.

Let me know how to get this working.

It seems that I missed that you need to block ‘Upload Files’ tab when user clicks ‘Add Media’ from the post editor page?

    Please confirm.
I may offer you a decision for that tomorrow.

If we can’t figure this out – will I be able to get a refund on Pro?

    I’m working on this issue.
Yes, of course. Just let me know that you wish to get a refund.

Try Pro development version 4.19.2.b3. It’s available from the same download page.
    Update includes:
Fix: Admin menu access add-on: User could upload new media at the Post Editor with “Media -> Add New” menu item blocked. “File Upload” tab is removed in this case now. User may select from the existing Media Library items only.

In case you will stay with Pro version, it’s better to use this forum
for the support questions related to the Pro version:

    Vladimir,

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. I will definitely be keeping the plugin and giving you a great rating.

If I have additional questions, I will contact you in the Pro forum.

    I appreciate the quick turn-around.
    Diana
