User Groups/Access Control and Domains

    I’m evaluating WordPress for my company and I have a few questions.

    We would like to have multiple levels of users with different network settings for each. Ideally, the vast majority of users would only be allowed to choose between two different themes. Another group of users would be able to pick between a wider variety of themes, and then a final set of users could completely customize their themes.

    We’d also like to allow different domain settings for the user groups. For example, users of the first group would have blogs under the first domain, for example blogs.example1.com/[username]. The users of the second group would have blogs under the second domain, for example blogs.example2.com/[username]. Users in the third group could customize their domain to be whatever they’d like (assuming that we handle the DNS settings properly).

    Is this something that can be done with one instance of WordPress in network mode?

    Maybe I should shorten and clarify my question…

    Does WordPress in Multisite mode support user groups? If so, can different sets of themes be assigned to different groups? How about domains; for example:
    – group1.example.com/username1, group1.example.com/username2
    – group2.example.com/username3, group2.example.com/username4

    Any groups would need to be added PER site.

    There really isn’t a way to assign themes to groups, though you can apply themes per site. In that example, they’d either all be separate multisites or you’d be using a multinetwork install.

    If so, I just hosed my test install with it. I think I accidentally assigned the main site of a domain ‘/’ to a site on the same domain but under a different path. I’m sure it’s fixable, but I was surprised that I was permitted to do something like that.

    That’s the one I was thinking of. I’ve only played with it, never really delved into it seriously.
