User checkout data changed with other users information

    Hi Team,
    We use woocommerce on our WordPress website hosted with wp-engine with caching enabled via CDN and stripe as a gateway for payments.

    We do not have any other cache plugin installed on our website.

    We have had 31000 sessions (new & returning users) and 933 transactions since when the issue was first detected i.e. July 15th, 2022 – 4th August 2022.

    Issue:

    July 15th User A placed an order at 1.48pm and User B at 2.03PM.
    August 4th User A placed an order at 5.31pm and User B at 4.56pm (inverse this time)

    User B’s name, email id, address1, address2, and the city got changed to User A’s information but not the state and pin code on thank you & order page.

    User A and User B do not know each other and bought different products – completely unrelated

    Stripe did get the correct information as meta therefore the charge was successful but thank you page changed the info entirely.

    July 18th & July 23, a user placed his order after logging in to his account on the checkout page. The fields were filled with his details -> user added his CC info on the stipe plugin -> clicked on place order.

    On thank you page -> the user’s info got changed to some other user that did not even exist on our system.

    Name, email id, street address, and the city got changed to someone who did not exist as a user on our website at all (but this user existed on our old website which was online before January 2022) but state, pin code & order notes were unchanged like the last incident.

    Out of 933 transactions, only 4 were affected by this issue, we have tried contacting wp-engine they said they have already excluded the following from the cache :

    /products-compare
    /coupon
    /my-account/lost-password
    /wp-json/wc
    /wc-api

    As well as the arguments:
    add-to-cart=.+
    wp-api=.+

    And finally, these cookies:
    woocommerce_items_in_cart=[1-9]+
    wp_woocommerce_session
    woocommerce_cart_hash
    woocommerce_recently_viewed
    store_notice[notice id]

    Also,
    WP Admin area
    wp-login.php
    Pages named cart, checkout, or check-out
    Pages where a cookie containing wordpress_ has a value set

    Adding to the background -> this error does not happen when there is high traffic on the website or when too many users are completing transactions. It just happens randomly.

    Please suggest what best could be done here?

    Sorry to hear about the issue.

    You will want your site to be updated first.

    Please update your WooCommerce, your WordPress version, and your database.

    Also, clear the site cache.

    — You can switch temporarily your theme to Storefront
    — Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce and Stripe Payment gateway
    — At this point, you can place a test order to check if the issue persists, if not, it means there was a conflict and you can reactivate the theme and plugins gradually one by one and check again after each reactivation until the cause of the issue is found.

    Hi Igor,
    Thank you for replying.

    We are in process of performing the upgrades.

    But as mentioned in my OP, only 4 transactions have been affected by this issue out of 933 in the past 20 days. That’s why it is very hard to replicate the error.

    It is not happening every day or every other day. It is entirely random.

    We cannot decide whether it is a plugin issue or a cache issue!

    Were any fatal errors generated during the time when those particular transactions took place? Please navigate to WooCommerce > Status > Logs and from the dropdown on the right side, please see if there are any logs starting with the words fatal-error. Let us know what you find.
