• Can anyone please help me?

I used the wp-db-backup plugin to backup my site – I had a bit of a scare from Bluehost – they deactivated my sites due to performance problems. This lead me to realise once I got it back online that it needed backing up.

I chose to backup to my computer and I then immediately lost all of the images from my site. I just get the little blue and white question mark in place of all the original images.
There are no images in the media library – but I have noticed that all of the images are now stored on my computer instead.

I have spent the last two days attempting to restore these images – I hasten to say one by one, editing each post individually. It is very slow going and I have 400 posts in total. I have managed to restore images to the most recent 90 posts or so but am sure there must be a quicker way than the method I am using?

Am I right or do I have to spend the next two weeks replacing all of these images?

I would be so grateful if anyone could help me.

  • Does right clicking on the red x show a path? If so, ftp your images to the directory shown in that path.

If you used wp-db-backup to backup the site and then restored from that, you have only backed up the database. You need a file backup as well to be able to perform a total restore.

Thank you – I’ve just tried your suggestion, but no it doesn’t show a path – or at least I can’t see a path.

And my images aren’t all in one file on my computer either – they are mixed up with lots of other images and documents that were already there.

Thank you cubecolour, could you tell me how I do a file backup also then please?

Clearly I don’t know enough about any of this – all I do is create a blog and expect it to work – which it does. But the minute I have problems, I haven’t got a clue!

The manual way to do a file backup is to connect to your hosting account by ftp and download the entire directory wordpress is installed in. At a minimum you should ensure you have a backup of the wp-config.php and the wp-content directory as well as the database backup.

    ok. Thanks for that.

Still haven’t got my images tho ;o((

Provide a link to one of your posts with broken images and one with working images and we may be able to look at the code to try to figure out what the difference is and perhaps advise further from there.

    Thanks.

This is a link to a post where the images are missing:

    https://www.yourgardeninginfo.com/making-a-garden-lawn-lawn-seeding-grass-seeding-turfing

and this is to a post where I have manually replaced the images after the disaster hit:

    https://www.yourgardeninginfo.com/growing-cacti-and-succulents-in-the-greenhouse

Any help would be most welcome – I have spent the last four days trying to fix the situation and am nowhere near finished as yet.

The problem here is simply your uploads folder.
The first (missing) image is supposed to be located at: https://www.yourgardeninginfo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/lawn-300×234.jpg

The second (existing) image is located at: https://www.yourgardeninginfo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/schlumbergera-Christmas-cactus.jpg

It seems the problem is that you are missing your 2010 uploads, or at least a large majority of them. Now, they may still be there, but if the folder isn’t named exactly right, it won’t work.

If you notice that something like 2010/08 doesn’t exist, but all the same images are in 2011/08, you may want to create 2010/08 and copy all the contents of 2011/08 into 2010/08, which would greatly help.

To see what path your image is looking for, just right-click the image then view the image location. Check the URL in the browser.
