    Hi GP,

Summary: I’d like help getting the plugin WP2Static to work well with GP.

Here is a link to a screenshot of the site, using GeneratePress, on my localhost:

    https://github.com/soft-copy/imgs/blob/master/Screenshot%20from%202019-10-01%2019-55-26.png

    Detail:

I have happily used GP for a couple of years. At present, my subscription to Premium has lapsed. I plan to renew, but I have a scenario that I’d like to make sure works, first.

The website I primarily want to use GP for is a “business brochure” website.

I did manage it on WP on Bluehost. I currently ‘own’ the URL, but have not renewed hosting.

I am experimenting with using WordPress to manage content on localhost on my laptop, and using the plugin WP2Static to generate static copies, then upload these static copies to a host that will serve static sites. I am currently experimenting using github. If I can get this working, I will create a DNS record to redirect requests for my ‘public’ URL to the static site on github.

I have had success using WP2Static in both single-site and multisite configurations, with the theme twentyseventeen.

I then tried applying, to one (initial state, no content besides that populated by the Add New Site process, the GeneratePress theme.

The site looks as expected on the local, dynamic website.

WP2Static runs without obvious error, and creates a zip file that I push to the appropriate github repo.

However, the appearance of the website as viewed from that repo is ugly, and mrkedly different from the dynamic, local version.

I am puzzled by this, since I do not think that GeneratePress particularly requires anything more dynamic than ‘please create a page’, which is what WP2Static does programmatically.

I think that a combination of
    – WP to manage content
    – GP to make websites look good
    – WP2Static to create static versions
    – Domain registration
    – Free or low cost hosting not requring a WP instance

would be a very compelling offering for most users of WP, and most users of GeneratePress.

Could you please help me figure out why the appearance of the site, after being rendered static and uploaded to github, differs from the appearance on the dynamic. local version?

    Hopefully,

    Jud

    Hi Jud,

I’m not familiar with the plugin, but one issue I’m seeing right away is the style.min.css file is a 404: https://your-website.github.io/wp-content/themes/generatepress/style.min.css

That file is necessary for most of the structure on the site.

    Thanks, Tom!

I found out about your theme through AWAI.

Given that many that find GP via AWAI will probably need not-so-dynamic websites, I think getting WP2Static working well with GP would enable those needing only static sites to save money on hosting, and allow them to worry less about hacks.

I’ll forward this info to the WP2Static team. Sounds like it should be straightforward to fix.

    Best Regards,

    Jud

    Tom,

The problem was with neither GP nor WP2Static.

My git workflow missed some files. In-My-Head-ware.

    Resolved.

    Thanks!

I did a tweetup mentioning GP. I’m tweaking a couple of things, then I’ll renew my GP license.

    Great work.
