use tags with spaces

I am wondering about the use and display of tags that have spaces. Example “gold fill” as a tag and gallery title. It seems to me that we are not able to do this at this point, right now it has to have a dash or underscore to work. Example “gold-fill” would be the tag and display as the gallery name.
is there a reason for not being able to use spaces?
am I missing something that a space in the tag can be used and displayed?
any help is greatly appreciated.
