Use of “Eh” in Logout Button
-
Hello,
I hope this is the right place for this. I just updated the WordPress version for a client of mine (the Canadian English version) and noticed that the Logout button now says “Log Out Eh!”. Not sure if this is new to 5.9 or a previous version, but it’s the first time I’ve seen it.
Generally speaking, the use of “eh” in marketing materials doesn’t happen in Canada. It is most often used to stereotype or make fun of Canadians, especially in US marketing materials. I’ve seen US marketers try to connect with Canadians by using this term — and it usually falls flat.
In this case, I was taken aback when I saw it. From my perspective — as both a Canadian and as a marketer! — it’s bordering on the offensive. It’s clear in context that the intent is to be funny and inclusive rather than offensive. However, in my eyes it’s not working — in comes across as demeaning and perpetuating a Canadian stereotype.
Is this just me? Maybe. But I suspect there are other Canadian marketers that feel the same way. Wanted to pass along that feedback to you in any case.
Thanks,
~Graham
