In this template I have h1 tags around the article title.

Because 5 articles/excerpts appear on the index page, the h1 tags are appearing 5 times in the source code. Googlebot prefers to see only one h1 tag on each page.

In order to comply with SEO standards, is it possible to display h2 tags on the index page, but h1 tags on the permalink (full article) page?

  • You could create a single post template (single.php) for your theme to display your “permalink” pages. Then change the post title to <h2> in your original templates, but keep it as <h1> in your new single post template.

Note this does not quite match with the type of compliance you’re shooting for (and it’s not just SEO “standards” we’re talking about), as a document is assumed to have a logical hierarchy that starts with H1.

Ah, that was easy enough. Well done, thanks!
