Use directly in a theme?

When you mean directly, I assume you mean in a page or post?
You can use a number of different plugins to display widgets inside your posts / pages. Here is one : widgets-on-pages. I am sure there are others.

My mistake. Its a widget plugin so should work with widgets. I wanted to use it in the theme in a specific location and was looking for the php code to put.
Figured the best way was to create a new widget and then use it.

Alternatively, you could create a sidebar at the desired location in your theme. Then all you would have to do is add the widget normally to the sidebar.
