You might want to have a look at our upload presets:
    https://cloudinary.com/blog/centralized_control_for_image_upload_image_size_format_thumbnail_generation_tagging_and_more

You can create an upload preset, and set its parameters the way you’d like, including automatically put all newly uploaded resources a folder, e.g., Jan2015. Set this preset as a default upload preset, so it’ll be applied to all uploads.

Then, you’ll be able to update this preset once a month to have the corresponding folder name.

    Hi – thanks for responding.

However my eyes sort of glass over and my dog starts whining when I try to absorb that article.

What would sell like hotcakes is a plugin… that automagically uses the default WordPress Uploads folder with year and month folders, and has that reside on Cloudinary. use it as a Push CDN

simple edits to wp-config can redirect wp-contents or uploads to an offsite location, but not sure if going ahead and adding years and months in advance will work or not. and it might not be that simple.

there are complicated solutions for using S3 and Cloudfront, and maybe Rackspace, but it seems difficult to pin down how it actually would work

step-by-step tutorial for what your’re suggesting would be very much appreciated — keeping in mind that the simplest thing is what most people want, don’t need to screen images or do edits automatically (super cool – but the mere mention of API gives me an eye twitch)

    regards
