Use admin filtering programmatically instead?

Is there a function I can use to do the same thing as using the “Admin Filtering” button in the directory settings?

I want to create a directory and have it show only a certain subset of users, just like you do with Admin Filtering. But I want to choose that subset of users based on a php variable of the current user, so I need to do it in the page template, not the UM interface,
