Usability problem: Pre-populated username is first and last name??

I’ve turned on the bouncer option to allow users to set their usernames but many of them are just blindly hitting the continue button.
The problem is that the default, pre-populated username is “John smith” (with the space!?)
No usernames on any up to date websites allow for spaces. Is there a way to pre-format the default username differently?
This is a real problem.
