    As for the other comment about repeating characters, you could try something with jQuery.

    Let the full name remain a required field.
    Let it be filled by a hidden input (=username) for those sites who want it that way (? Some admin config)

    Problem is (apart from those in that above ticket) non-geeky users who open accounts in wordpress only sites and also in wp-bp sites wonder/ask why “the name protocol” is different in the two.
