URLs Shortened Incorrectly / Have to Manually Insert Correct URL
-
When a URL / permalink is too long to show below the title (while writing a post) WordPress will automatically shorten the URL, but only visually.
To give you an example, this is what a URL would normally look like: https://website.com/category/this-url-is-too-long-for-wordpress-to-show-without-shortening-it/
So WordPress shortens it so that it becomes something like: https://website.com/category/this-url-is…ortening-it/
Before Yoast SEO 3.0 this wasn’t a problem because WordPress only shortens it visually so the actual permalink didn’t change.
However, since Yoast SEO 3.0 we have to option to change the URL not only below the title at the top of the page, but also in Yoast SEO’s content box and this is where things go wrong (I think).
The snippet editor doesn’t copy the full post URL, but it copies the URL WordPress automatically shortens.
To use the example above, Yoast’s snippet editor will use this URL: https://website.com/category/this-url-is…ortening-it/
And when you publish the posts, the dots will disappear from the URL and it will eventually become something like this: https://website.com/category/this-url-isortening-it/
As you can see the URL Yoast’s snippet box creates is totally different than the original URL and the only fix for that is to manually inset the URL you want into Yoast’s snippet editor.
I hope the example above shows you what’s going on and what’s causing the problem and I hope to see it fixed soon.
