I’m not sure if I understand you – does a picture not open in the Lightbox or do you want to have a picture in the Lightbox to be clickable? The latter one is not possible – if you want to have links, you need to add them in the image caption.

External URLs are supported – just link to an image and not to some page with the image.

Note: Wikipedia links to images are not images! These are links to the Wikipedia image viewer:

If you want to link to the image itself, the URL must be different:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a8/Tour_Eiffel_Wikimedia_Commons.jpg

Just be aware that clicking images already is used for zoom, dragging on mobile devices, closing with “swipe up” etc. – so just overriding the click action would not work.
