URL Problems

    Hi,

    Okay so I made a topic yesterday about something else but I think I’ve gotten past that and I’ve run into a couple more issues. If you go to my domain it shows “index of/” which is better than “this site can’t be reached” but it’s still not my site.

    I checked online and I have the index.php file that a lot of people said they were missing for “index of/” to show. When I used MAMP to boot up WordPress, I put katiehennessy.ie in the URL section far too early and it showed “this site can’t be reached” when it still wasn’t connected to a hosting site, which really pushed me back cause then I was unable to actually log in to change it back!

    Now when I try to visit the page using MAMP, it shows “404 Not Found
    The resource requested could not be found on this server!”

    Also I tried clicking on WordPress on the “index of/” and it wants me to log in so is that all I have to do? I used a name, username and a password to log into the WordPress which I used when I used MAMP to log in… is this the same as the one I enter in here? I really want to log into this old one as I did a lot of progress on the site before I tried getting it online.

    Does this make sense? I’m very new at all this so please try to keep explanations basic if possible!

  • Please try to put the files and folders inside wordpress folder in the public_html.

    I think they are? I put them into public_html and then extracted the zip file using the file manager in cPanel, is that correct?

    Move the files and folders inside wordpress folder outsite the wordpress folder.

    It should work.

    Thank you so much! That got rid of the index page, now I’m straight to the installer. So if I get the details from my web hoster, I’ll be able to get back to the website I had before will I?

    I am not sure. I don’t know what kind of back up files that your web hoster provides.

    I tried doing it there with localhost as the hostname but this pops up…

    “Error establishing a database connection
    This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

    Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    Are you sure that the database server is running?
    If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.”

    I actually don’t have a wp-config.php file, where would I get that from?

    do you mean your old site is offline (localhost) or other domain name?

    You can find wp-config.php file in public_html. Rename wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php.

    If you have other domain name before.. It’s better to ask your web hosting support to move your domain. It’s complicated for new user.

    Yes I mean my old site was offline, if I can’t get back to it, it’s not the end of the world, I can start again if needs be.

    I got my domain working there anyway, the hosting company helped me with the details ??

    oh I see.. Actually you can move your wordpress site from local server to live server by reading this article https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-move-wordpress-from-local-server-to-live-site/

    You can also use a plugin such as duplicator.
