• Hi I have a what i suspect is a very basic question but its causing me a load of problems.I have just started with wordpress so have the newest version.

I am trying to upload a new theme for my site. I am downloading it,unzipping it and uploading it thru ftp (coffeecup). The message i am getting then when I return to my theme editor is
    Broken Themes

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.
    Name Description
    Stylesheet is missing.

I have tried now with 3 different themes and this happens every time.

What am I doing wrong? Please help!!

  • Can you provide links to download those ‘broken’ themes?

    Thanks.

    Hi MichaelH,

I originally had the EXACT same problem as janerobin…still do, but with the only difference: when I RE-uploaded the theme a second time, it now only says I’m missing a stylesheet, and I haven’t been able to solve that problem yet.

The problem I am now running in to is that I just installed Dean’s Permalink Migration Plugin in order to change the permalinks for SEO purposes(great one btw), and additionally, I installed the 404 Notifier (recommended.)All went very well, except my e-mail acct is filling up with a ton of messages with 404 notices that read:

404 Report – a file not found error was registered on your site.
    404 URL: https://angeladoss.com/wp-content/themes/_ControlPanel/globalwarming-awareness2007/images/li.gif
    Referred by: https://angeladoss.com/wp-content/themes/_ControlPanel/globalwarming-awareness2007/style.css

I am sure this notice is due to my missing stylesheet with the current theme I’m using because the permalinks are now SEO friendly and are working great with no problems.

This is the name of my theme:
    Globalwarming Awareness2007 by Pincopallino
    Globalwarming Awareness2007 Theme

This is the link where I got this theme: https://themes.wordpress.net/page/32/

In WP, when I am in the “themes” window, I am getting these remarks:

    Globalwarming Awareness2007 by Pincopallino
All of this theme’s files are located in wp-content/themes/_ControlPanel/globalwarming-awareness2007

    Broken Themes
The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.

    Name Description:
    Stylesheet is missing.

Thank you for any help you can provide us.

Hi Michael. These are the links from 2 of them(I think).I also tried using one of the more popular ones and got the same problem. All the files for uploading to the blog, have what look like little cameras at the side of them, apart from the last one which is called style or something like that and that seems to have something that looks like a piece of paper with writing on in at the side of it.It has been the same on all of theme that I have downloaded, unzipped and got ready to upload onto the site thru the ftp. Dont know if that means that they are not downloading properly(or whether it means nothing at all) You may be able to tell that I am new to this.

    https://themes.wordpress.net/download.php?theme=2810

    @janerobin

Following the instructions in Adding new Themes I successfully installed the two themes and had both themes were listed correctly (not in the Broken Themes section).

Make sure your FTP program is uploading in ASCII mode (or if using FileZilla in auto mode).

    Hi,

I’m actually really new to wordpress. I’ve been trying to install a theme and I’m having the same issue with the style sheet missing.

I’m uploading the theme from this site –

    https://pearsonified.com/theme/neoclassical/

using my cpanel. I currently don’t have access to a FTP site. I’ve downloaded and re-loaded the themes as per the instructions on wordpress – but I keep receiving the same error – style sheet missing -installation incomplete – Broken themes.

Please let me know how I can fix this – I’ve actually tried downloading differ themes in the theme directory and the same issue arises.

I’ve using the newest version of wordpress.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You,
    Samara

trevino – In cPanel, navigate to the wp-content/themes folder and create a folder called ‘neoclassical’ then navigate to that folder and upload the neoclassical.zip file and Extract the contents.

The neoclassical zip file has no directory structure so if you extracted that file directly in the wp-content/themes folder you would have problems.

What that theme author doesn’t put the theme in a sub-folder in the zip file baffles me, but once you follow the above instructions, the theme does not appear in the Broken Themes section.

    MichaelH,
Can you take a look at my theme please. It appears to me that it doesn’t come with a rtl.css file in the theme editor sidebar that most themes come with after installing.

My question is above. Thank you so very much,
    angdoss

Downloading and installing https://themes.wordpress.net/download.php?theme=2241 works for me.

It doesn’t show as a Broken Theme.

Does the theme have a rtl.css file on the sidebar area under theme editor in WP like other themes seem to have? I am starting to wonder if the broken theme (missing stylesheet) is maybe coming from the default or classic theme. Is that a possibility? I am having no problem with this theme I chose, but I just can’t get rid of the error notice…unfortunately, it doesn’t tell you which one is in error.

Just to let you know: I moved everything back over to the default theme and then deleted the 2241 theme completely. This left me with only the default and classic theme that automatically comes with WP. Lo and Behold, the missing stylesheet notice is still there.

With that information, I just re-uploaded the 2241 theme back in and moved everything back over, but still to no avail.

Thank you kindly for your time.

Only see style.css and style.css.bak in that theme.

Ok, that’s exactly what I saw too. Then it is no longer a problem.

I want to thank you for all your support. I have found the problem!! Perhaps I should be using my FileZilla FTP Client in the future. Was using the FTP Client from my hosting acct which every time, it was coming over with an extra folder that would get stuck in the middle – the “ControlPanel folder.” Once I managed to delete that empty folder, whalla!

    Thank you kindly,

    Angela
