uploading media to folder of my choice

I am using wordpress to run a site, not just a blog. When I upload files I need some way of setting their location to different folders. For instance, I want to stores pictures in wp-content/images, but pdfs and documents in wp-content/docs.However, unless I wish to link all my files manually, I can’t organize the files, because the media uploader can’t handle multiple paths to uploaded files. Does anyone know of a plugin that will let me do this?

By the way, now that wordpress is no linger used just as a blogging platform, this should probably be something supported by wordpress itself.
