Uploading images w/filezilla vs. w/WP image editor

  • I’ve uploaded image files from my computer to my server using the image-editing tool within “write posts.” Works fine. I pick the one I want from WP’s image browser.

    I’ve uploaded image files from my computer to my server using ftp (Filezilla), but they never show up in the WP image browser.

    The files are all the same type, are all in the same folder, are in every way the same that I can tell. Why aren’t the files I uploaded with ftp available in the WP image browser? Thanks

    I see one thing. The images in the WP browser are thumbnails it creates. I’m guessing my “problem” is insurmountable. If I want to store images on the server for future insertion, I’m going to have to download via ftp to a folder on whatever computer I’m using and upload again via wp image upload. Or type the often-convoluted file names into the WYSIWYG image inserter. Am I right?

    Why aren’t the files I uploaded with ftp available in the WP image browser?

    The WP Uploader takes more than just images, and it does more than simply store them. Uploading an image reads metadata from it and also creates a thumbnail as well as a post specifically for that image. The post/page can be linked to, as can the original image.

    In other words, the WP uploader also puts information about the image into the database itself, not just the file on the server.
