Whenever I upload a PDF file to my site four extra JPG files are created in my Media Library. This seemed to start around about when I upgraded to WP4.9.1 a week or three ago but I cannot say if it was coincidental.

These extra files are JPG copies of the PDF and are the three different sizes as defined in Settings/Media for Image files plus another presumably standard-sized one. It looks like something is persuading WordPress that PDFs are Image files.

I have already gone down the route of deactivating plugins: I deactivated all of them except my security plugins but this still happens.

The funny thing is that if I migrate my site to wamp/localhost on my own laptop (using All in One WP Migration) these JPGs are not generated when I upload a PDF in that environment. Call me confused.

Does anyone have any clue about how or why this might be happening? My site is single-site and uncomplicated. Using the Weaver Xtreme theme.

This came in in 4.8, I think. WP generates thumbnails of the first page of the PDF to use on the back end. I may not be happening on your localhost if you don’t have the right PHP libraries installed that let WP do this. In any case, it’s a normal part of WP. (Why can we not use these thumbnails on the front end when inserting a PDF from the media library? I don’t know and would certainly like to see that enabled!)

    OK, thanks for the explanation.

All I can say is – Why? I don’t want or need these files. Who does? I often have to replace several PDFs at a time (up to 15) with new versions and having all these extraneous, useless and unwanted JPGs proliferating and lying about cluttering the place up is just a waste of space and my time getting rid of them.

Does everyone else just live with this? Is it switch-offable? Would going to a different version of PHP fix it? My localhost is using 7.0.10 and my host is on 5.4, with 7.0 available. Is there a particular PHP setting or extension involved? I’m not really used to messing around with these things so any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Now I feel really stupid. I may be a WordPress ingenue but I’m not that green. Normally when I experience an unexpected behaviour the first thing I do is google it to see if it happens elsewhere. That particular part of my brain failed to kick in with this one, so thank you for your patience and pointing out these simple resolutions to what appears not to be a problem at all but a feature.

    Issue over, and thanks again.
