I am finding that when jpgs are uploaded either directly through the media library browser or programmatically via sideloading an image URL, they get converted to png format. It seems that this happens when the images are larger than the large image dimensions in the media settings. Any help on why this might be happening would be appreciated.

This happens with or without Imsanity activated.

If that is happening without Imsanity then I’m not certain I can point to what is causing that (as it’s obviously not Imsanity). Do you have any other plugins that manipulate or optimize your images? Also, it’s very odd to have them converted to PNG and not the other way around (PNG to JPG). Do you have something that might be forcing lossless compression on your images? Is it perhaps that the JPGs you are uploading, though they have the .jpg extension are actually PNGs? What does it show if you open those in a photo editor?

Thanks for the quick response. It seems that you are correct that the file is actually a png although named with a jpg extension and this explains the “conversion issue”. Now I need to track down why this is the case and that is probably not a WP problem ??

Bother…sorry, that stinks. I hope you find the solution!

I will resolve this thread but feel free to open a new one if you have further questions!
