Uploaded images too small

Whenever I upload an image to a blog on wordpress it comes out too small, thumbnail size. Is there an easy way to make it whatever size I want? I tried resizing but of course it distorts the image. Is the only option to upload the image to my site and use that url for the image? Any help would be much appreciate.
