Hi. When I upload images they don’t display – just a box with a blue question mark. I have read a lot on the forums and have tried various things with no joy. I have 2 websites on the same hosting package and images are fine on my first one (www.sicarroll.co.uk) but not on one I’ve just started: https://www.classicheadlines.co.uk
When I upload and cam see images if I choose ‘edit’ in Media and then the ‘edit image’ button. Apart from that, all thumbnails and main images are blue questions marks and don’t display at all when viewing the page. I’ve looked at code and URL for images seems to be ok and I’ve used FTP to make sure the images are where they should be.
I’m using TwentyEleven with no plugins. I’ve restored default header image but have put an image into the only post to illustrate problem.
    Please help . . .

OK. Just to be clear, should permissions be the same for all wp-content files and directories? If so, should that be 755 or 775? And is there a way to make files default to the correct setting rather than manually changing each one?

Thanks again for all you help with this.

Don’t forget that there are file permissions and file ownerships. Files need to be readable by the user under which your server is running. Often www-data or http.

As a test, you could recursively change the permissions of the entire uploads directory tree to 777. See what happens. Certainly don’t leave it like that but it’s a way of seeing if permissions are indeed the problem (which I suspect they are).

Just tried 777 and got same result (presumably I just change the settings and they take immediate effect? i.e. I don’t need to do anything to make them active further than click OK?)

When I set them back, is it best to make them 775 or 755?
    Thanks

    No wait!!!!
I see what you mean now about recursively – have just done that and can see post image and all thumbnails in my media gallery!!!

So, what does that mean, given that everything is set to 777? Does that confirm it’s a server/hosting issue?

I think things were wrong in the first place. Recursively make directories 755 and files 644.

    Genius!!!!
Everything works – I can even upload the custom header which was where all my troubles started.

I really can’t thank you enough.

And thanks, too, to shadez and Paramdeo Singh for your suggestions and contributions.

I can finally crack on with getting classicheadlines.co.uk up and running.
