• Why do the images I upload to the Media Library get a dash 1 added to the file name?

For example, I upload a file named Five-Things-to-Know-About-Stroke-233×350.jpg and it gets renamed to Five-Things-to-Know-About-Stroke-233×350-1.jpg

I’ve spent a long time trying to figure out why my HTML image link to the Five-Things-to-Know-About-Stroke-233×350.jpg file doesn’t bring up the image. I checked my uploads folder and discovered that the original and all resized ones include -1 in the name.

I don’t have a previous version of Five-Things-to-Know-About-Stroke-233×350.jpg in the folder so there is no reason to rename it.

A link check of my site showed that there are many images not showing on my pages. They are all pointing to the name of the file I uploaded but can’t be found because WordPress changed them to add -1 to the file name. Why is this happening? Is there a setting I can edit so -1 won’t be added to file names?
