I followed all of the instructions, created my database, altered wp-config.php, and uploaded everything to my site, including wp-config.php to the root directory. Now when I go to mydomain.com/wp-admin/intall, I’m getting a 404 error. I am at a loss for what could have gone wrong.

It still goes to my HTML site.

    yourdomain.com/index.php ?

The point I’m trying to make is that you shouldn’t have to visit the install page directly. I believe if you visit any of the WordPress entry points it should sort itself out.

Nope – it’s not working. Just tried and its telling me that the page doesn’t exist but offers to take me to index.html because of the similar page name.

Rename your index.html as this is interfering with the index.php in wordpress. Can you also include your site url so that we can see what is going on to better advise you.

Absolutely. It’s annarboravon.com – the HTML is a redirect. I’m renaming my index.html right now.

I’ve renamed index.html so it’s no longer interfering, and now I’m getting a forbidden message at the site.

AAH! I’ve got it, and am feeling pretty stupid right now. I’d uploaded the file incorrectly, so I should have been going to annarboravon.com/wordpress/wp-admin… That was the key. Thank you all for your help. I’m re-uploading everything now to the root directory so the original paths should work.
