I can not upload files greater than 2Mb and I can not change this into the server.
What I do is to upload a pdf file directly to wp-content/uploads/publications and then I add the link into the page.
The problem is that a “Page not found” appears.
I have other files in this “wp-content/uploads/publications” and they work, what am I doing wrong?

  • Hi limdor, do you see that the file is in wp-content/uploads/publications ? My suspicion is that the .pdf isn’t going over to the WordPress server for some reason (perhaps size related?).

When you upload the file directly how are you doing that? Are you using filezilla, ftp, some other application? Depending on the application you’re using I can probably find you some good directions for making sure that your .pdf actually went over.

The reason I’m asking is the “Page not found” error can happen when permissions are set to be more private than intended. This is really, really, easy to do accidentally.

One final question/suggestion: Would following these directions work with your setup?

    1. Add new post.
    2. Click “Add Media” button.
    3. Using the file selection thing, select your PDF and click the upload button.
    4. After it uploads, you’ll have this new section that shows a Title, Caption, Description, and Link URL. Fill in any of the fields the way you want.
    5. Click “File URL”.
    6. Click “Insert into Post”.

    From here.

    Yes

I’ve tried with filezilla and also with Secure File Transfer Client.

The permissions for the publication folder are 664 and for the file 664.
I have a file in the thesis folder bigger and working. thesis folder and this file have the same permissions.

I cannot upload using this method because the file is bigger than 2Mb

The last thing I can think of that would make this an easy fix: Does the name of your pdf file have any spaces, slashes, or other characters like $, %, or & in it? If it does, try removing those from the name and re-uploading.

If that’s not the problem, I think double checking the link is the next thing I’d do. Can you try putting the link to your file into your browser’s navigation bar (the bar on the top where it starts with “https://www.”. If that fails, then we know that the link is wrong somehow and can focus on fixing that.

I’ve tried to change the name of the file and the problem persist.
Here you can see the file in filezilla

Here what’s going on in the web page

And this is the text that I add when I edit the page

It’s impossible for me to see what I amb doing wrong.

Awesome, thanks for the information. You’re right there is something funny going on.
This link works (when copy pasted into a browser):
    https://gilab.udg.edu/wp-content/uploads/publications/Bardera09B.bib
    This does not:
    https://gilab.udg.edu/wp-content/uploads/publications/File.pdf

So we know it’s not the file name, and we know that the directory you’re putting it in is accesible (since we can get to the .bib file) which leaves us with two likely possibilities:
    1) It’s a problem with the size.
To test: Upload a much smaller .pdf file. Does a link to that file work?
    2) It’s a problem with the permissions.
To test: Change the permissions to be 666 and see if the link starts working (put them back when you’re done!).

Funnier, I’ve tried different things and the problem persists.
I’ve downloaded Bardera09B.bib file, renamed the file to Bardera.bib and upload again.
And still doesn’t work if I acces to Bardera.bib.
Then I’ve tried to change the permissions for Bardera.bib to 666 and doesn’t work.

Then I’ve tried to renamed Bardera09B.bib to Bardera09Bs.bib in the server and as I expected https://gilab.udg.edu/wp-content/uploads/publications/Bardera09B.bib doesn’t work.

Then I’ve downloaded Bardera09Bs.bib to my machine, renamed to Bardera09B.bib and upload to the server to be sure that there is no problem with the owner of the file or how the ftp creates the file. And it works.

Trying to add more information, I’ve renamed File.pdf to Bardera09B.bib to see if I can acces to the file but with the information of File.pdf but I get the old Bardera09B.bib. Maybe for the wordpress cache?

    Any clue?

Smart thinking with the downloading and re-uploading. That does seem to show that the problem is not permissions. I had a thought: Is it possible to reduce the size of the .pdf file to under 2MB? I know that’s not a “fix”, but it should at least get this working.

Most .pdf applications including adobe acrobat will let you reduce the size of .pdfs pretty easily.

Another thing to try, can you make a really small .pdf file, upload it over FTP and see if it works? It’s pretty weird that when you overwrote the Bardera09B.bib file it still showed you the old one. I suspect that you’d need to “Clear History” in your browser to see the new version.

Shame on me! Time ago I moved the web page from one server to another server.
I acces to the server through the machine name and I was accessing to the old server.
    Sorry any inconvenience.

Hey, that sounds like pretty good news to me, glad you worked it out!
