I cannot upload an image that is already in the wordpress media library. Connections insists on uploading a new file from my computer. Very inconvenient and annoying, especially when it means even more images going into the media library, which makes backups more difficult. Defaulting to the media library for pics/logos seems like it should be the default. Am I missing a setting or something??

Correct, Connections does not use the Media Library as to not clutter it up. Using it for logos is fine and maybe even much more preferable is you are running a smaller directory. However, with directories in the hundreds, thousands and hundreds of thousands of entries the Media Library would be far less manageable and would likely cause performance issues when attempting to use the Media Library with so many assets, especially on inexpensive shared hosts where server resources are very limited. It could even negatively impact the performance of the entire site because WordPress stores all the Media Library metadata within the posts table which mean WordPress have to potentially deal with a far, far larger dataset when making database queries to display a page.

In short, for performance and scalability Connections does not use the Media Library. I hope I have thoroughly addressed your concern of the design decision of how to store logo/photo assets.
