• Hi everyone.

Basically, every plugin or image that has ever been uploaded to my uploads folder stays there permanently. If I delete the plugin successfully, the upload folder still holds the plugin from when it was first uploaded. Especially frustrating are the images. Even when I permanently delete images from the media library, they stay in the uploads folder permanently.

So, the disk space on my server is being taken up by all these old items that can only be removed from the uploads folder manually. However, manual removal is now a problem, because I can no longer keep track of which file names are in use, and which are old versions etc that are safe to delete.

How do I clean this up (safely) and ensure that going forward, things don’t get stuck in the uploads folder? Permissions issue?

Not sure what information you require, I will provide anything required to resolve this. I’d really appreciate some help with this. Thanks.

  • Hello @jason9j

Are you using some sort of backup/duplicator plugin? It may be tedious, but you may need to disable these plugins and completely delete them from your site and start testing out deleting files etc. Then re adding them and deleting them to see if they still stick around.

Hi Yobani – thanks for your response, much appreciated.

I have UpDraft Plus, but the problem pre-dates that. But perhaps it is the popular image replace tool interfering with the process….I might ask them about it before I start pulling things apart. I really can’t think what else it would be. Thanks again for the lead.

I’m going to leave this open for a little while and post the solution when it (hopefully) comes along.
