• I want to upgrade my WordPress system (WP, PHP, & MySQL) and am seeking advice for upgrading these applications. I know how to upgrade WP but am less familiar with upgrading it along with PHP and MySQL.

Do you have a preferred order? For example, is it better to upgrade in
this order: 1. WP, 2. PHP, 3. MySQL
this order: 1. PHP, 2. MySQL, 3. WP

    Here are the versions:

    Current PHP: 5.6.9
    Latest PHP Version: 7.1.10

    Current WP Version: 4.6.1
    Latest Version: 4.8.2

    Current MySQL Version: 5.1.66
    Latest MySQL Version: 5.7.21

Because MySQL requires upgrading one version at a time (e.g. 5.1 to 5.2), upgrading it will take several steps. Might it help to upgrade the three applications gradually together?

Or is the order or speed of upgrades likely to matter at all? What do you think?

Do WordPress first, so if something breaks, you know it’s just WP.

The order doesn’t really matter. Take down httpd/apache while you’re doing it, though, so your site isn’t wonky to visitors.

How are you hosting your site? There’s not a real reason to upgrade MySQL stepwise and if you can switch to MariaDB, you’ll gain a little speed.
