upgrading membership

Hi I currently have a site with 3 membership levels. If somebody has signed up to level one and wants to upgrade to the next level to extend their membership is there a way that they only pay the difference of the cost of the membership and not the full price? Currently the only thing I can think of is a discount code but seems wrong that it works this way.
