We’re interested in upgrading to the WooCommerce Paypal Payments plugin, as it’s clear that WooCommerce PayPal Checkout Gateway is being abandoned, which is too bad because it works fine for us, and we really have no reason to upgrade other than it seems right to use maintained plugins.

We have a few hundred WooCommerce Subscriptions that renew all the time, and we need to know if WooCommerce Paypal Payments is going to take over seamlessly with the subscriptions that have been set up through WooCommerce PayPal Checkout Gateway. If there is going to be a problem with existing subscriptions being renewed by the new plugin, we’re going to be forced to keep using WooCommerce PayPal Checkout Gateway until there is a solution.

WooCommerce PayPal Checkout Gateway allowed us to connect to Paypal via the first party API using the following credentials:

    1. username
    2. password
    3. signature

We would prefer to manually set up WooCommerce Paypal Payments, but the credentials are not the same, and are now:

    1. Merchant ID
    2. Client ID
    3. Live Secret Key

It would be very helpful if you would provide a little information as to where in the Paypal website to get those credentials. If you could provide a link or set of instructions to get those new credentials, we would appreciate it.

Lastly, like others, we’re a little confused about the “Connect to Paypal” process, and since we’re dealing with a lot of money, being confused is not acceptable. The ambiguous nature of converting our already existing account to a business account and not knowing why leaves us scratching our heads. We’re not the type of people to just click buttons just to get to the next step. We need to know why we’re being forced to do this. If we want to enter the credentials manually as described above, will we have problems because we didn’t convert?

    Please help.

    Hi @skunkbad,

Regarding your existing subscriptions, I suggest reading through the upgrade guide here:
    https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-paypal-payments/paypal-payments-upgrade-guide/
When disabling the previous PayPal Checkout plugin, PayPal Payments will “emulate” it and sends the existing billing agreements to PayPal. This means your existing subscriptions will continue to renew as usual when you use PayPal Payments instead of PayPal Checkout. New subscriptions would then be created with the new vaulting method instead of the old billing agreements.
Before you switch over your live site, I suggest giving it a try on a staging site.

To use all features of the plugin, you may need to accept certain terms from PayPal. This can only be done with the “Connect to PayPal” button. For example, if your account did not accept the terms of the PayPal Card Processing yet, then the PayPal Card Processing will not be available for your account.
We generally recommend connecting your PayPal account with the integrated onboarding as this will automatically configure a new REST application and insert the required API credentials for you.

If you would like to connect manually, then you can get the Client ID and Secret Key from the PayPal developer dashboard under: https://developer.paypal.com/
The Merchant ID is visible in your business account settings:
    https://www.paypal.com/us/smarthelp/article/how-do-i-find-my-secure-merchant-id-on-my-paypal-account-faq3850
We are currently creating some documentation around the manual connection to make it more clear where you can get the credentials. But the “Connect to PayPal” button is the preferred method in any case.

Please let us know if anything remains unclear.

    Kind regards,
    Niklas

    Thank you.

Given the comments and perceived satisfaction level of this new plugin, we’ve decided to hold off on using it for now. Saying things like, “Before you switch over your live site, I suggest giving it a try on a staging site.”, really doesn’t build our confidence. For us there is no benefit to switching, as Paypal transactions are happening without errors.

    Hi @skunkbad,

The PayPal Checkout plugin will remain available until around March next year. So if it works well for you and you are not interested any of the new features such as Vaulting, PayPal Card Processing, or Pay Later, then the previous plugin should continue to work fine.

However, any major changes to a production shop environment should always be tested on a staging site first to make sure everything works as you would expect, especially critical parts like a payment gateway. This recommendation does not only apply to this plugin.

    Kind regards,
    Niklas
