• Hi

I would like to know the impact of upgrading to the latest version of WP? Currently on 4.2.10

The site was built sometime ago, I am trying to support this on my own, and as a non web developer this is really scary

  • You will benefit from various improvements, security fix, …

    To be safe :

    1. make a backup
    2. if your host has a staging environment, use it to test (you can otherwise make a local copy on your computer)
    3. update your plugins and your theme
    4. check on wp.org to see if they are marked compatible with WP 4.8 (if not, check if someone say it’s broken)
    5. update WordPress
    6. verify that everything works
    7. repeat on your production environment

If you don’t use a staging environment and something is broken, you can either deactivate the plugin and ask on the forums for help, or restore your latest backup.

Thanks, my issue is I come from a SAP background, websites are not my fortee..

I don’t have a staging enviroment, and I’ve taken a backup from my hosting manager. Can I upgrade from there and if it break restore from my latest backup??

    Hello!

If you plan on upgrading across more than two major releases, you should consider upgrading incrementally to avoid potential conflicts and minimize the risks of database damage. For example, if you plan on upgrading from 2.5 to 4.7.3, upgrade to 2.7 first, followed by 2.9, then 3.1, and so on. Essentially, it’s okay to skip one release, but never skip TWO when upgrading.

I don’t know what type of backup your hosting manager does, but I assume it should be fine.

In order to be extra safe, you should have a backup solution to your current backup :), so you could also try adding a backup plugin, like BackWPUp or UpdraftPlus.
