When upgrading does wordpress keep new themes and plugins I have added or not? I’m using 2.0.

I received the following message from my hosting service re upgrading wordpress, however it’s not clear to me if my adding new themes and plugins means I have ‘modified’ wordpress.

I don’t want to have to reinstall themes and plugins for every upgrade. Surely this is not required?

    Please read carefully
    Click on Upgrade only if
    – no files, languages, themes have been modified
    – you haven’t added mods to this installation of WordPress
Info: Your current installation will be backed up.

  • Looks like you have a ‘Fantastico’ install? If so it really depends on how much you have hacked your 2.0 install, you may find it easier to upgrade manually, it’s possible with some patience.

If you have only made a few changes to ‘themes’ and ‘plugins’ simply do a new install and then copy these folders over.

    Yes it’s a fantastico install.

I don’t want to attempt a manual upgrade – too technical.

I’ve changed the theme and added 2 plugins.

Won’t a ‘new install’ (ie upgrade to v2.1) delete all my existing posts (created using v2.0), as well as links and categories I’ve added to the new theme?

OR – is blog data (posts, categories, links, etc) contained in the wp-content folder (ie in the themes and plugins folders)?

After I upgrade to v2.1 – do I then just copy across the wp-content folder (from v2.0)?

Do I need to copy any other folders or files after upgrading (eg wp-admin or wp-includes)?

All your blog data is stored in the database and won’t be affected.
After the install, just copy your theme folder (overwrite) to your new install. Plugins also. Theme hacks should work fine and you’ll have to activate the plugins.

    Thanks… Another query.

The upgrade (via my cpanel/ fantastico) just installs the default theme(s) for WP.

So after the upgrade to v2.1 I just copy/overwrite the wp-content folder (ie themes and plugins folders).

Then select the new theme I want – and the posts, archives etc will appear as they are in the current version 2.0?

In an upgrade – the most thing is backing up the db and newer versions of WP can just access the db?

It’s a bit hard trying to explain what I mean in writing ??

    You have it exactly right.
