upgrade tp 3.0 messed up style.css and sidebar.php files

Were you using the default theme before you upgraded? When you auto-upgrade, WordPress erases the changes you made to the default theme.

unfortunately when I ftp’d the files I overwrote the local file. Is there a way to restore the original?

no i dont think so unless you kept backups

There is no way to restore the local file, unless your host offers backups (some do), but if for some reason it does not, then looks like you may have to restyle and create that sidebar.

As for your sidebar, it looks as if there was no size assigned to your widget headers in the css… so assign a font-size to it and I think it will be fine.
