Upgrade to 3.3.1 created HTTP 500 Error

    I inherited a website which was still running a rather old version of WordPress (1.5 or something of the like) and I tried to automatically upgrade it to 3.3.1 and now I’m getting a HTTP 500 error on both the website page and the /wp-admin page.

    I took a backup before I attempted to upgrade, but am hoping there’s a way to fix this problem without using it.

    I’m sure it’s probably a rookie mistake I’ve made – but hey, I’m a rookie at this, so I apologize in advance.
