    Apologies for stupidity of question, but I don’t want to make a mistake. I am being advised that there is an update to 3.1: The following themes have new versions available. Check the ones you want to update and then click “Update Themes”.

    Please Note: Any customizations you have made to theme files will be lost. Please consider using child themes for modifications.

    I don’t understand what it means by ‘any customisations to theme files will be lost’ and that I should consider using child themes for modification. Is it safe for me to update or will I lose my files, layout or appearance?

  • Customizations is when you modify your theme files instead of creating a new child theme.
    If you didn’t modify any files then you will not lose anything.
