• I am running 2.6.1. I tried to automatically upgrade to 2.6.2. It will back up my files. Then it will back up my database. But when it goes to download the 2.6.2 file to begin instillation, my browser says, “page done” and nothing happens.

Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone have any advice?

Why don’t you manually upgrade to 2.6.2 instead?

WordPress does not automatically upgrade itself. So if you’re using a plugin to do it, then you really need to talk to that plugin’s author instead of posting about it here.

Because I’m new to WordPress and don’t know much. I’ve tried to do an automatic update once and it was a disaster. Now I am afraid to try again until I understand it better. Nor did I understand the a “plugin” issue was not a “WordPerss” issue until now.

Sorry if I disturbed the flow of this forum by my inappropriate post. Just looking for some help.

I meant “manual upgrade” in my last post.

Manual upgrades are easier than automatic ones. Really, it’s not hard. Just update all the WordPress files to the new version. That’s really, really all there is to it. It’s not complex, but people seem to think it is for some reason.

If you understand how to replace one file with another, then you’ll have no trouble at all.

I have another question. All files have been changed (2.6.1 -> 2.6.2)? I must overwrite all files or only few of them?

My website is displaying some type of error message. I have recently also upgraded from WordPress 2.6 to WordPress 2.6.2 but when I go to the website it shows the message still. The messages are:

Warning: main(/home/content/p/a/r/paranormalboy/html/wp-includes/compat.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/p/a/r/paranormalboy/html/wp-settings.php on line 203

Warning: main(/home/content/p/a/r/paranormalboy/html/wp-includes/compat.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/p/a/r/paranormalboy/html/wp-settings.php on line 203

Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required ‘/home/content/p/a/r/paranormalboy/html/wp-includes/compat.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/local/lib/php’) in /home/content/p/a/r/paranormalboy/html/wp-settings.php on line 203

any idea on how to fix this?

yes, upload the file that is missing, wp-includes/compat.php

how on earth do people have web sites without understanding how to use ftp properly??

I actually already looked for that file in my directory and it was there. I even deleted that one file and reuploaded it again but even after that, my website is still displaying those messages. I’ve already deleted my cookies. Anything else I can do?

I have another question. All files have been changed (2.6.1 -> 2.6.2)? I must overwrite all files or only few of them?

Generally, we recommend deleting the old files first and then uploading them, because for some reason, people are really bad at “overwriting” files. However, if you know what you’re doing, then overwriting works fine. I upgrade my own site by overwriting the files on it.

And while it’s true that only some files have changed, it’s hard to say which files those are without a comparison between the old and the new. So I’d say to just upload all of them.

And remember, you do not want to delete certain files if you do it that way. Like your plugins, your theme, your uploaded images, the wp-config.php, etc.

A file comparison or synchronization tool can help. Checkout GoodSync and Beyond Compare. There are lots out there but I have found these two to be very good.

Thanks to all who have been kind to the asker. we have to remember that not everyone is at the same level. We are all trying to survive.

I really do not understand why wordpress does not automatically update.
I have tried through upgrades and it gets so far and then just sits there.
I really do not want to start deleting WP 2.5.1 as I shall never see it again.
Can somebody please give me simple directions how to do this?

    Regards Sandy
