I have a number of WordPress sites and have encountered issues upgrading to version 5.0.
When running the upgrade the process starts but hangs on the ‘unpacking the update’ stage.
From looking at the file directory the new ‘upgrade’ directory has been created and populated but the process appears to have been stopped at this point.
There has been no error messages.
On some sites I have been able to re run the upgrade successfully (after a few attempts) but some sites remain incomplete.
For example one site reports as running 5.0 but not all features are present (eg the new twenty nineteen theme is missing) so I am concerned the upgrade has not completed successfully.
Are there any new requirements for the php environment for this upgrade – does it require more resources etc?
I host my sites with UK2 on a shared server environment.

Any advice on how to troubleshoot would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I have completed a manual update.
I have run ‘healthcheck’ and site appears to be working ok.

However when I run the file integrity check (in the healthcheck plugin) I now get a number of errors – should I be concerned about this?

There may be an easier way. First I used the Fix Another Update in Progress plugin to unlock the existing update then deactivated all plugins. After that I updated to 5.0 without a problem.

I’m running into this issue on multiple well-maintained WP installs operating on PHP 7.x. @otto42 I searched online for possible reasons and can’t find a reason. Any idea why this seems to be happening? I’ve been on WP for 13+ years and never encountered this before.

Without seeing the problem, there is no way for me to give an opinion. Could be a permissions problem or an issue with ownership.

Like @mworleysr, I deactivated all plugins, then clicked the re-install WordPress 5.0.1 button. I finally saw the WordPress 5.0 Welcome Screen.

I know this is “resolved” but I just wanted to add that I also had that same error message, and a lot of people who search for this specific error message will arrive at this page.

I found that the error was caused by php timing out after 30 seconds. If you click on “update”, and you get “unpacking the update” after 30 seconds, it’s very likely the default timeout in php.

To fix this, open php.ini, and set this option to “60”

; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds
    ; https://php.net/max-execution-time
; Note: This directive is hardcoded to 0 for the CLI SAPI
    max_execution_time=60
