• Like many, I’ve been dreading upgrading from 2.5 to 2.5.1
But this morning I decided it just had to be done.
Backed up the database. Backed up all the files. Went through the upgrade guide, finally got to that wonderful moment when you’re going to the website to select upgrade.php. Held my breath, and pressed enter.
Guess what message I get ? LOL
It says “Your website database does not need upgrading”.
My blog works fine, no difference, so is it just me ??
Did I need to upgrade, well maybe I’ll never know, I was rather hoping a big sign may come up saying “Well done Mike, your blog is now powered by WordPress 2.5.1

    Boy, will I sleep tonite

  • You only need to run “upgrade” when WP has to make changes to the database and a small upgrade such as this one usually doesn’t include those. You did need to upgrade, there are some files added and overwritten, but it’s just that nothing happened to your database.

    Sleep well.

I lied, well, not exactly, since I didn’t upgrade myself so I didn’t know, but 2.5 to 2.5.1 apparently does require an “upgrade”.

I still think those instructions need to be clarified.

You never, ever, need to manually go to the upgrade.php page. Really.

If you upload a new version of WordPress correctly, then simply go to the normal wp-admin pages, it will tell you that it needs to upgrade the database (if it does need to) and will give you the link to do it. If it does not tell you, then it does not need to.
