• Dear Alex,

First of all I would like to thank you for your awesome work with the hueman theme. I have been using your theme to develop a new website for the company that I currently work for. I was about to go live with our new site when I tried upgrading to the newest version of your theme. Somehow you have updated your theme twice shortly after each other. The first update worked fine, but the 1.4.8 (i believe) update breaks my entire site.

I have a child folder and have pretty much inserted every folder and file in there that was originally part or your themes folder. Thinking there could be no way that an update of your original theme would overwrite any of my child folder settings etc.

Turns out I am wrong about that. Could you give me a hint as to what it is I am doing wrong. Where is my thinking error?

Second question I have for you: I am having issues with woocommerce. The checkout and cart pages don’t work properly (cart always empty and stuff like that). I have disabled all plugins (every single one of them except woocommerce) and tried and tried, but no succes. I’m always stuck with an empty cart no matter what I do.

Is there anything you could do for me (us) to help me out? Anything??

If you would like to see the result of my butchering your theme check it out:

    https://www.sleepfit.nl/nl/ Dutch version with woocommerce

Any help is very much appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Bart

  • Hi rockitman. Before you updated the parent theme, did you change the active theme to the parent theme or to one of the default WordPress themes, like Twenty Fifteen? Regarding WooCommerce, you might have better luck getting an answer by posting your question on the WooCommerce Support page.

    Hi Mr Brown,

Thanks for your reply. I did not change my active theme (child theme) to twenty twelve or the parent theme when upgrading. Is this something I should have done?

My WooCommerce related issues I will post at the appropriate forum.

Best regards and thanks you in advance,

    Bart

Not necessarily; just wondering if you did. An upgrade to the parent theme will not overwrite any of the files in your child theme. Can you explain what you mean by, “I have a child folder and have pretty much inserted every folder and file in there that was originally part or your themes folder.” Does that mean you copied all the folders/files from the parent theme into your child theme, and then upgraded the parent theme, and now your site doesn’t work? I’m curious as to why you would copy all the folders/files into a child theme. Did you make changes to all of them?

That is exactly what I mean. I have altered many of the files including the functions.php. Something tells me that therein lies the error (the functions.php). Or I could be totally off.

I must note that I have not transferred all the files from the original theme folder to my child folder. Only those I have altered, which are many.

Ow and.. I use a network install of wordpress

    Best regards,

    Bart

The more you change things in a child theme the greater the risk that, at some point, it won’t be compatible with the parent theme when the parent theme is updated. I don’t think this happens very often because, in general, theme authors tend to make small, incremental changes and add functionality during updates. But it is a possibility. I don’t know of any way around that other than (1) hoping that the theme author (any theme author for that matter) doesn’t make any significant structural changes during an update, or (2) creating your own theme. The last couple of updates to Hueman haven’t contained any major changes; mostly just additional functionality. If you can post a link to your site, and give me an idea of what’s not working, I’ll be glad to take a look at it.

I am sure it has to do with my coding, however I don’t get any significant errors in my browser console. I am still working on cleaning up the code and the site, it’s an ongoing process. I just had to push the site to go live at a specific date, and so I did.

Anyways you are free to take a look at it if you please. I really appreciate it.
