The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-includes/version.php

    Installation Failed

When I check the permissions on my host it says full access for everyone.

This is a server issue. You will either need to speak to your hosts about it or you will need to upgrade manually.

Thank you I will contact my host.

I did try to change the attributes to 777 using filezilla following advise elsewhere but has had little impact except to stop the update getting past the ‘unpacking files’ command.

If I do it manually do I need to back up all the content as well as I have a theme I have changed the CSS for?

A database backup is always a good idea before updating – whether you’re updating manually or using the 1-click updater. Other than that, you really shouldn’t have to back anything else up. You will find full instructions for manual upgrading in Upgrading_WordPress.
